Raetihi Village, population 1068
Raetihi was founded in 1893 and before that the area was a maori food bowl and battleground.
Hardy pioneers originally milled the area for timber, now known for its ski industry, carrots and outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, canoeing, tramping(The Tongariro Crossing) and mountain biking(The Mangapurua Track & 42nd Traverse).
Now a sleepy village, just a stones throw from Mt Ruapehu and the Whanganui River, Raetihi is a vibrant community with interests as diverse as the local landscape. Visit Raetihi on the 3rd Saturday of each month for the popular Raetihi Country Market day. June sees the start of the Waimarino Art Awards. November roars to life with the Raetihi Ripper. February and March feature the booming Waimarino A & P Show and Waimarino Rodeo.
